SHAFT - SURFACE ROUGHNESS
The seal contact surface of a plunge ground shaft should be finished to a surface roughness of 8 to 20 µin Ra and be free from machining leads.
SHAFT MATERIAL AND HARDNESS
Seals perform best on heat treated steel. Good chrome-plated and nickel-plated surfaces ground before and after plating are acceptable. Unlubricated and abrasive environments require shafts hardened from 50 to 72 Rc maximum wear resistance. Most sealing applications will require a shaft hardness of 35 Rc minimum to resist wear. Shafts made from soft mild steels can be used in some applications. Consult EPM Technical Department fro further information.

SHAFT LEAD-IN CHAMFER
The shaft should be provided with a lead-in chamfer with a diametral difference of d(1) - d(2) and be free from burrs, sharp corners or rough machining marks.

BORE MATERIAL AND FINISH
Cast iron, steel, aluminum and other commonly used metallic and non-metallic materials like plastic are acceptable. A bore finish of approximately 63 in Ra or smoother should be maintained to assure proper sealing.
