Fabric Reinforced Vee Packings are recommended for liquid and gas service on all heavy-duty equipment where operating pressures and clearances exceed those recommended for the homogeneous packings. They are widely used in all types of reciprocating pump and hydarulic cylinder applications and are available in a number of compositions covering an exceptionally wide range of operating conditions. Fabric Reinforced Vee Packings are usually constructed of cotton duck or asbestos cloth, coated with various elastomers and molded under heat and pressure. Ordering Vee Packings are furnished in sets or as individual rings. If sets are specified, male and female adapters of the same stock are normally supplied. Unless otherwise specified by the customer, all packings are furnished split to facilitate installation. Inquiries or orders should state the exact stuffing box depth and total entrance (if any) of gland ring or nut into the stuffing box.
Adjustment On endless ring installations no gland pressure should be used, since the sole function of the gland is to back up the packings when fluid pressure is applied. On split packing installations no gland pressure is required to effect a seal in the packings themselves. However, light gland pressure is usually required to seal the joints. If light pressure will not produce the desired sealing, the trouble lies elsewhere. The packings should be removed and inspected and replaced, if necessary. To avoid excessive gland pressure, the gland pressure should be bolted down metal-to-metal on shims. EPM can provide complete engineering service and recommendations upon request. |
